FORMAT: Team Format
Teams will consist of two men and two women - nonbinary players can take any spot in the team.
AGES: 14+
FEE: $140 + $5 pickleballbrackets.com fee (which comes out to $36.25 per player). The captain will be responsible for registering and paying for the team.
MINIMUM GAMES PLAYED: Approximately four
SCHEDULE: ***UPDATE*** Due to the high number of teams registered, the tournament will run from 10 am to 10 pm
DEADLINE: The captain must register by Sunday, April 21st. Withdrawing your registration before Sunday, April 21st will include a refund (minus a $15 processing fee). SKILL: Combined team DUPRs of 12, 14, 16 and 18
This means the total DUPR rating of your team cannot be higher than the skill level of the event. For example, if your team has four members with DUPR ratings of 2.9, 2.9, 2.8, and 3.1, you would sign up for DUPR 12. If your team has four members with DUPR ratings of 3.0, 2.9, 3.2, and 3.4, you would sign up for DUPR 14. The tournament results will not be submitted to DUPR.
EVENT DETAILS: Teams compete against each other in Matches. A Match consists of four Games, starting with one women’s doubles Game, followed by one men’s doubles Game, and then two mixed doubles Games. If two teams are tied after these four games, a singles tiebreaker is played, with a rotational system involving all four players. Teams first play each other in group or round-robin play, and then the top 3 teams square off in a single-elimination format.
CAPTAINS: All teams must designate a Team Captain, who will be responsible for various captain duties including receiving text communication, given orientation by tournament committee as well as requiring captain to provide mixed doubles team designations, and singles tTiebreaker rotations for each match.
SKILL LEVEL: Unsure which Event to sign up for? Use this as a guide:
Total DUPR of all four players on your team:
12 Event: DUPR rating of up to 12.99
14 Event: DUPR rating between 13-14.99
16 Event: DUPR rating between 15-16.99
18 Event: DUPR rating of 17 and above
DUPR ratings will be used to seed pools.
The match coordinator may move you/your team to another skill level based on your/your partner’s DUPR rating.
# OF POOLS: 3-5 teams will be in one pool. If there are 6-8 teams, there will be two pools.
MATCHES: Each Match will consist of four Games to 21 (win by 2) with modified rally scoring. The four Games will be played in the following order:
women’s doubles
men’s doubles
two mixed doubles
A singles tiebreaker will be played to determine the winner of the Match if teams are tied at 2-2 in Games.
GAMES: Each game will be played with rally scoring to 21 points (win by 2) with cap max score at 25 points. During rally scoring players do not switch sides after winning points. Player A for each team serves and receives on the right side when the score is even, and Player B serves and receives on the left side when the score is odd. Players will change ends when one team reaches the score of 11. This format and order are subject to change. Rally scoring will be played until a team reaches 20, at which time the team reaching 20 is subject to a freeze on rally scoring and must score all future points while serving. If the trailing team reaches 18, that team too will be subject to a freeze on rally scoring and must score all future points while serving. If both teams are tied 19-19, then both teams are immediately frozen when it becomes 20-19. All Games must be won by 2 points.
ROUND ROBIN SEEDING: Teams will be distributed into positions in balance based on their total DUPRs.
ROUND ROBIN: Teams will be playing one match against each other teams in the pool.
If 3 teams- each team plays 2 round robin games
If 4 teams- each team plays 3 round robin games
SINGLE ELIMINATION PLAYOFF: The top three teams will enter the playoffs. The qualification for entering the playoffs is one team from each pool. If there are two pools, the third team will be selected from either pool based on the total number of points earned and points against in all games they played.
TOTAL TIEBREAKER DURING ROUND ROBIN: If all teams have the same record of matches, the team with the best total number of points earned and points against in all games they played enters the playoffs. If a tie remains, the team with the highest total DUPR enters the playoffs.
COIN TOSS: At the start of each match, there will be a coin toss. The winner will elect to choose the option
Select serve/side/receive
Being the Home Team or Away Team for that Match
If the team chooses option ONE they can choose to select the side of the court to start all games in that team match or they can choose to serve/receive or they can defer to the other team. If they choose to serve/receive the other team can choose the side. If they choose a side, the other team can choose to serve or receive. If a team chooses to pick serve/side/receive then the other team will be allowed to choose if they want to be the home team or away team.
HOME: The Home team will choose its mixed doubles teams last. The home team must declare first during the singles tiebreaker game. The teams will alternate first serve after each game.
AWAY: The Away team must declare the mixed doubles teams first, but gets to go last on singles Dreambreaker player choice.
PLAYER INITIATED TIME-OUTS: Each team has one minute of time out per game.
PLAYER CHANGE OF SIDE/SERVE: A team may choose to switch player sides during a time-out or end change and they must inform another team of the switch before play resumes.
SINGLES TIEBREAKER TO DETERMINE WINNER: If two teams playing a Match are tied 2-2 after the doubles and mixed doubles Games, a singles tiebreaker will be played. For 2022, a singles tiebreaker is a Game to 21 (win by 2) with rally scoring, where each team must rotate its 4 players for 4 singles rallies in a set order until a singles tiebreaker is completed.
Immediately following the completion of the second and final mixed doubles, the Home Team will have 1 minute to designate the first player selected in the order of rotation of its 4 singles players for the a singles tiebreaker to another team. The Home Team’s #1 player will be disclosed to the Away Team. The Away Team will then have 1 minute to designate its opposing Player 1 to another team. This process will repeat until all 4 players on each team are declared to each other.
The singles tiebreaker will use the same rally scoring used in Games as described above.
All team members will rotate in 4-rally rotations until the singles tiebreaker is concluded
(Player 1 plays 4 rallies, then Player 2 plays 4 rallies, then Player 3 plays 4 rallies, then
Player 4 plays 4 rallies, and then the rotation repeats in the same order).
In terms of sides, singles players will serve from the side (left/right) of the court, based
on their team score, as is typical in singles. The player will serve on the right side when
that player’s team score is even, and when the team score is odd, the player on that team
will serve from the left side of the court. During the singles tiebreaker, each team will be
allotted one time-out. Teams will change ends when one team reaches the score of 11.
Austin Deaf Pickleball has the right to change event start times or merge any event based on the good of the tournament.
